Our minimum product design criteria:
√ Laundry detergents, shampoos, hand cleaners, floor cleaners, pet shampoos and metal cleaners are phosphorous free and septic system safe - since 1990. √ No butyl Cellosolve, also known as 2-butoxyethanol, EB, butyl glcol, CAS#111-76-2- since 1975. √ Mercury free – since 2003. √ DEA and MEA free (diethanolamine and monoethanolamine) – since 1995. √ Sulfur free – no sulfates nor sulfonated compounds are used. √ Nitrite free – since 1984. √ Raw materials we purchase do not contain sodium hydroxide – since 2003. √ No halogens, nor halogenated raw materials are used. (This means no fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, nor astatine in our products.) √ Volatile organic compounds (VOC) and ozone depleting substances are avoided since 1994. √ Agriculture derivatives have preference over petroleum derivatives – since 1988. √ Surfactants are selected from the most biodegradable groups. We do not use nonoxynol, nor nonylphenol ethoxylates – since 1992. √ Considered non-toxic by any route of entry. √ Sources for determining ingredient acceptability: The Personal Care Products Council, Greener Choices.org (sponsored by Consumer’s Union); Green Seal, Inc. specifications and guidelines (GS Codes) for various product classes; Soap and Detergent Association (SDA); vendors’ technical support staff; International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization (IARC); National Toxicology Program (NTP); the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); United States Department of Agriculture; MSDS’ for raw materials; Certificates of Analysis; and, miscellaneous others as they become known or useful to us.
Other green stipulations:
√ Formulas are designed for cold mixing – since 2003. √ Plastic containers are recyclable, resin categories 1 & 2; 55 gallon plastic drums are recycled; cardboards and packages are from recycled materials; totes are recycled with vendors and customers; steel drums, when required, are recycled drums – since 1990. √ Plant, office, and exterior lighting are energy efficient – since 1990. √ Plant heating is supplemented with ceiling fans – since 1990. √ Office and plant temperatures are set based on energy conservation since 1974.
